Guest Announcement: John Swasey

We’re excited to announce another guest for No Brand Con 2018, and that is voice actor John Swasey. John started down the road of anime in 1997, when he landed his first role in Golden Boy from ADV Films. Since then, John has gone on to voice hundreds shows and characters with Sentai Films, Funimation, ADV Films, Switchblade Films, Okratron 5000, Gearbox, Seraphim Digital and Illumitoons just to name a few. John’s wife once quipped that there are certain actors who might be the “Brad Pitts” of anime but John is the “Kevin Bacon” of anime.

Being more of the character actor type has given John the freedom to voice bazillions of characters such as Undertaker in Black Butler, Salvador in Borderlands II (VG), Gendo in Evangelion, Sgt. Hauser in Halo (VG), Lord Death in Soul Eater, Hoenheim in Fullmetal Alchemist, Sir Crocodile in One Piece, Dodoria in DBZ Kai, Kogoro in Sgt. Frog, Huang in Darker than Black, Hades in Fairy Tale, Zachary in Attack on Titan, Aramaki in Ghost in the Shell, and Jinnouchi in Summer Wars, as well as roles in the live action films 2009 Lost Memories, Conduct Zero, Yesterday, Jungle Juice, and the Gamera trilogy. Most recently you can catch John in the broadcast series of GANGSTA as Chad, and Akame Ga Kill as Bols as seen on Toonami.

John voiced his favorite role (Kumatetsu, The Beast) in Funimation’s theatrical release of Mamoru Hosoda’s film, The Boy and the Beast.

In 2004, John jumped to the other side of the “mic” to direct. Some of the shows he has recently directed include Ushio and Tora, Squid Girl, Flip Flappers, and Yona Yona Penguin. John loves working in the world of anime as a director and voice actor!

Currently John is working with pals Kyle Jones and Jay Hickman on an original animation full length movie called The Perfect Khan. In addition to anime, John has acted in radio and tv commercials and films.

Interested in Joining No Brand Con Staff? Come to Our Open Meeting This Week!

No Brand Con is a completely volunteer run event, and we’re always looking for more people to join the team. Conventions like ours don’t happen without ordinary people like you (and me) pitching in, and if you’ve ever wanted to staff a convention now’s a great time to start.

This week on Thursday, February 8th, No Brand Con is having an open staff meeting for new members in Eau Claire, WI. It starts at 7:00pm in the Council Oak room of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire’s Davies Center.

Joining staff has plenty of perks, and is frankly a ton of fun. Consider stopping by and get on the (metaphorical) train to awesome-town!

(Regular meetings continue at 8pm on Thursday nights at other locations – if you can’t make this meeting and would like to join staff please email us for more information)

Guest Announcement: Kaye Cosplay (Sammi Nystrom)

We’re happy to announce another guest for No Brand Con 2018, Sammi Nystrom, aka “Kaye Cosplay!”

Nystrom is an award-winning cosplayer and professional costumer for the Walt Disney Company. Since 2005, she has won over fifteen cosplay awards, most recently representing the United States for the International Cosplay League competition that was held in Madrid, Spain, where she was awarded 2nd place Solo Craftsmanship.

Many who follow her work have come to know Sammi for her craftsmanship, technicality, and cleanliness in sewing. An early fanatic of anime, comics, video games, and anything “nerdy”, Sammi quickly became immersed in the convention and cosplay world, making her first cosplay at the age of 12. A master at designing cosplays to suit real people, she has created a body of work showcasing that anybody can cosplay the characters they love.

Have You Considered Submitting a Panel to No Brand Con 2018?

A large part of any No Brand Con experience is, of course, the panels. Whether you’re trying to get the best cosplay tips, plunge into in-depth analysis of your favorite series, hear bizarre industry stories you’d never expect, or a plethora of other geeky topics, it’s the a great way to spend your time.

And while some of these panels are hosted by our amazing guests, a huge chunk of our programming is provided by our attendees themselves. Fan run panels by people like you often provide the highlights of the convention, and we couldn’t do this without them. We also consider time hosting a panel as “double Volunteer hours,” which means hosting an hour long panel counts as two hours of volunteer time.

If you’re interested in submitting a panel for No Brand Con 2018, you can head on over to our Panels page. There you’ll find the rules along with our online submission form.

We’re excited to find out what you want to do!

Announcing Our Black Friday to Cyber Monday Preregistration Sale!

We just got back from Daisho Con where quite a few people took advantage of our $20 special Road Show preregistration rate. We know not everyone can make it to any of the cons our team goes to throughout the year though, and it seemed unfair to never offer that deal to the rest of our attendees. With that in mind, and the apropos timing of the Holiday season, we have decided to run a Black Friday to Cyber Monday sale!

From Friday November 24th until Monday November 27th, you can preregister online for No Brand Con 2018 for just $20. That’s ten dollars less than our normal online price — heck, that’s getting a weekend badge for less than the at-door price of most of our day badges!

All you have to do to get the discount is go to our preregistration page between Friday and Monday, and you’ll find the lower price listed. This is our best rate for preregistration, so don’t miss your opportunity to take advantage of it!

Guest Announcement: SungWon Cho (ProZD)

We’re happy to announce another guest for No Brand Con 2018, and that’s SungWon Cho — though you may know him better as “ProZD.” Normally this is the point of the guest annoucement post where I attempt to naturally segue into the guest’s official bio, but there’s not really a good way to do that this time around. Instead, I’ll just abruptly cut to it here: Continue reading Guest Announcement: SungWon Cho (ProZD)
